Stray dogs rescued in Salford will be putting their best paws forward to raise funds for one of the charities which helped them.

Dozens of dogs, rescued by Salford City Council’s dog wardens, will be VIP – very important pooches – guests of honour at the annual Dogs in Salford festival at Clifton Country Park on Sunday June 25.

The festival, which runs from 11am to 4pm, aims to raise funds for Rochdale Dog Rescue which looks after some of the dogs found in Salford and remind people that hundreds of rescued pooches are still looking for their fur-ever home.

Dog warden Erica Eaton says the recent tale of April, an elderly Staffie abandoned with two huge tumours that weighed 1.5 kilos, shows the valuable work Rochdale Dog Rescue do. The charity funded a £400 operation to remove the growths and further medical care for April. April was adopted last week and is now settled in a new home in Tameside and all set for a summer holiday in France with her new owners.

Councillor David Lancaster, lead member for environment and community safety said:  “The festival is all about celebrating dogs and the joy they bring us and it’s a great day out for all dogs and their owners.

“Thanks to Rochdale Dog Rescue, April has a chance of a new life. She’s such a happy little dog and will make someone a wonderful family pet.”

Among the attractions are Wagtail UK Ltd’s doggy detectives who will be showing off their amazing detection skills. The dogs are used to sniff out everything from illegal drugs and tobacco to detecting explosives.

And children at the event can also turn detective by following a treasure hunt or enjoy the bouncy castles, face painting and poster competition.

For dogs there’s free microchipping, an agility course and a competition with eight categories:

Harley’s Prettiest Girl sponsored by Harley’s Heroes  Best Golden Oldie sponsored by SNS Marquees Best Scruff sponsored by Rob Hiatt Best Trick sponsored by Four Acres Doggy Day Camp Reg’s Most Handsome Boy sponsored by Little Jem Boarding Kennels   Best Young Handler sponsored by Buile Hill Park Hall Waggiest Tail sponsored by Sun Chemicals Limited April’s Best Rescue sponsored by Salford City Council’s dogwardens

The winners from each category will then be entered into the best in show which will be judged by the main sponsor Wagtail UK Limited.
